Limerick derby weekend as Celtics take on Eagles in Basketball Ireland’s Division 1

LIMERICK Celtics clash with the Limerick Sport Eagles at St Munchins in the third round of the Insuremyvan.ie – Division 1.

Basketball Ireland’s Division 1 resumes this week as two of Limerick’s basketball franchises go head to head for the first time this season. The Limerick Celtics will take on the UL based Limerick Sport Eagles in the third round of the championship at St. Munchins College.

Both sides are fresh off wins in their previous fixture with the Celtics besting Scotts Lakers Killarney by a margin of seven points winning 111-104. Andre Wolford was in scintillating form for the Limerick side, pouring in 55 points going 8/14 from beyond the arc. Rafael Llopis Martinez chipped in with 11 rebounds.

The Eagles boast a pair of home wins against the Portlaoise Panthers and the Killarney Cougars in their opening outings. In the first round win over Portlaoise Manny Payton had 25 points in 33 minutes with Jack Coyne adding five assists. Against Killarney, Payton needed just 39 minutes in scoring 43 points and adding 6 dimes in the 94-86 wins.

Following this weekend’s game, the sides will receive a fortnights break before Division 1 returns on November 6 when the Celtics travel to Killarney and the Sports Eagles host IT Carlow.

In other fixtures throughout the the round, the Drogheda Wolves are set to take on LYIT Donegal in Ballymakenny College while Titans BC have Ulster University for company at the Ballinfoile Centre.

Dublin Lions will have their first home game of the season so far when McGowans Tolka Rovers visit Colaiste Brid, the final game of the round sees Fr. Mathews take on the UCC Demons at Fr. Mathews Arena.
