Round Up | Limerick SHC reaches final four as relegation decided in both sections

BOTH Limerick SHC quarter-finals and relegation finals were played over the weekend.

In the quarter-final double header in the TUS Gaelic Grounds on Sunday, underdogs South Liberties and Adare gave their all against Kilmallock and Patrickswell respectively but in the end, the established guard came away with victories and a place in the last four.

In the opening game of the afternoon, there was nothing to separate the sides with four goals from Liberties not enough to put away the Balbec.

In added time, 1-3 from Graeme Mulcahy helped Kilmallock take a 1-33 to 5-17 win with a late goal from Barry Nash proving too little too late.

That contest was followed by that of Adare and Patrickswell. A slow burner of a first half had Adare ahead by three with the backing of a strong breeze.

Their lead was as many with two minutes of normal time to play but four points from play in three minutes from Jason Gillane swung the contest in their favour as Patrickswell held on for a 0-20 to 0-18 win.

That sets up repeat pairings in the semi-finals with the Well facing Na Piarsaigh and Doon taking on Kilmallock for the second consecutive year.

On Saturday afternoon, the relegation finals were decided with Ahane and Ballybrown meeting in the Section A decider.

Tom Morrissey, who would finish with 1-12, had an early goal from Ahane as they opened up a four point lead inside three minutes. The East side wouldn’t trail again as they held off any Ballybrown fightback to earn a place in Section A for the third successive year.

Ballybrown return to Section B after just one season in A.

Elsewhere, Monaleen’s time in the senior ranks has come to an end after they were beaten by Blackrock in the relegation final.

Blackrock maintained their senior status for the third year as their 0-20 to 0-18 win ends Monaleen’s five year stint in the top tier.

On Friday evening, Kildimo Pallaskenry claimed the first piece of silverware on offer for the year as they beat Garryspillane 1-19 to 2-11 in the County Cup Final.
