LIMERICK swimmer Róisín Ní Riain competed in this morning’s S13 100m butterfly final, finishing in 8th place with a time of 1:09:26.
She smashed her personal best in the heat earlier in the morning, swimming 1:08:18 to unexpectedly qualify for the final. Italy’s Carlotta Gill won gold in the event with a time of 1:02:65.
It’s expected that we’ll be hearing a lot more of the 16-year-old Gaelcholáiste Luimnigh student in the next few days with more of her favoured events to come.
“My main events are still to come so getting out there and being able to race in a final today felt really great. It prepares me really well for the rest of the week.”
Speaking of the support she has been receiving both far back home in Ireland and near within the Team Ireland sphere in Japan, Ní Riain has said that it’s really lovely for her during her experience in Tokyo.
“It was great, I could them all when I came out so that’s really lovely. Everyone’s been watching back at home, all my friends and family so that’s been really good.”
Being the youngest athlete with Team Ireland in Tokyo is an achievement on its own but to reach the final in her first event is a step few would’ve predicted.
There are plenty more events remaining for Ní Riain of Limerick Swimming Club with the 100m Backstroke up next and we’ll keep you updated at Sporting Limerick.
