HAILING from Drombanna, Limerick’s Róisín Ní Ríain is another local hero representing Ireland at the Summer Paralympics in Tokyo.
The 16-year-old trains with Limerick Swimming Club and is Ireland’s youngest athlete at the games.
She announced her arrival on the world stage with a string of impressive swims at the World Para Swimming Series in Italy in late 2020.
Her fine form has continued into this year, winning bronze on her debut at the European Championship in May.
Ní Riain has competed in a litany of swimming events throughout her career.
Under the tutelage of her coach John Szaranek, Ní Riain races in the S13 100m Backstroke, SB13 100m Breaststroke, S13 100m Butterfly, S13 50m & 200m Freestyle, SM13 200m Individual Medley (IM) events.
Róisín has recently finished Transition Year in the all-irish secondary school at Gaelcholáiste Luimnigh.
She is the eldest in her family and has three younger sisters, including twins.
Similar to the Olympic Games, these were meant to take place last year but were postponed due to the pandemic.
Limerick already had plenty to cheer in the Olympic games last month with Róisín Upton, Carolyn Hayes, Sarah Lavin & Greg O’Shea all taking part in Tokyo and it’ll be more of the same support from the Treaty county for Ní Ríain with the Paralympic Games kicking off next Tuesday the 24th.
We’ll be keeping you up to date on Róisín’s progress here at Sporting Limerick.
