30 YEAR-old looshead prop James Cronin joined the list of departing Munster players last week.
The Corkman has played 142 times for his home province but will not have his contract renewed at the end of the season.
Munster are already planning for next season without the services of international star CJ Stander but the absence of three brilliant clubmen in Billy Holland, Tommy O’Donnell and James Cronin will also hit Johann Van Graan’s side hard – especially during international windows.
Forwards coach Graham Rowntree recognizes the challenge of replacing those experienced players and highlighted their contribution to Munster Rugby but is also confident in the nexr generation of players coming through the ranks.
“That’s what happens isn’t it?,” said the former British and Irish Lions coach.
“As you evolve players leave, they pass on their knowledge to the young guys coming through.
“The group of players you just mentioned are exceptional at that and we move on. That’s how clubs evolve.
“They’re three brilliant men and I can’t speak highly enough about them and particularly the way they share their knowledge with young guys coming through.
“So no [I’m not worried about next season], I’m happy with the guys coming in to replace them.”
One such player that could fill James Cronin’s void is youngster Josh Wycherley. Wycherley made a name for himself against Clermont Auvergne in Decemeber when he won Man of the Match but has found game-time hard to come by since.
Rowntree was however quick to point out that the 21 year-old has a ‘big future’ ahead of him at Munster and that next season will provide him with a big opportunity to get more game-time.
“He has kicked on already. I think he’s had some injury problems, particularly at the start of the year and unfortunately in a competitive position like that you go quickly to the back of the queue and wait for your turn.
“But again, he’s been patient in the process. He’s a very professional young man, constantly working on his game and he’ll be back. He’s got a big future at this club.”
Munster take on Cardiff Blues this Friday evening at Thomond Park hoping to bounce back from their dissapointing 24-20 defeat to Connacht in the last round of Rainbow Cup fixtures.
