THE Limerick District League junior football season has been cancelled for the second consecutive year following a meeting of the LDMC on Tuesday night.
LDMC secretary Ger Smyth sent an email to all clubs to inform them of the decision. The email read as follows:
“Dear Secretary, Having considered all correspondence from clubs and after long deliberations within our committee, the LDMC committee have taken all opinions on board and have decided to bring season 2020/21 to a close”
Last week, the LDMC recommended that the season be cancelled but stated that they would listen to the opinions of all clubs before making a final decision. It is believed that many well established clubs in the league including Ballynanty Rovers and Aisling Annacotty voted for the season to continue.
There is outrage on social media platforms following the news and it is tough to take for lower league clubs like Kilfrush Crusaders who have now been in pole position for promotion from Division 1A on two occasions but have been denied the opportunity to finish the season.
It is believed that fears over the timescale given to finish the current season before starting a new one was one of the main issues which led the LDMC to the decision to cancel.
