Man arrested following search for driver of car which collided with armed gardaí after failure to stop

GARDAÍ searching for the driver of a car that collided with an armed Garda patrol car after failing to stop for gardaí in Co Limerick on Sunday, have arrested a man.

“One man aged in his mid-30s has been arrested in relation to this incident. He is currently being detained in Bruff Garda Station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984,” said a garda spokesman.

“Investigations are ongoing,” they added.

Gardaí were searching for the driver of a car that allegedly reversed into a Garda Armed Support Unit (ASU) vehicle yesterday after failing to stop for officers.

Gardaí had responded to a report of “an incident of dangerous driving that took place in the Murroe village area of Limerick on Sunday, 2nd May, 2021 at approximately 9am”, a spokesman said.

“Gardaí observed a vehicle driving in the area which failed to stop for Gardaí. A managed containment operation ensued and the driver of the car crashed into a ditch and while reversing out of the ditch, reversed into a Garda vehicle.”

“The driver fled the scene on foot and a female passenger remained at the scene. No persons were injured during the incident.”

Gardaí did not comment when asked to clarify reports locally that an aircraft was used in the search for the driver.
