GARDAÍ are keeping an open mind in their investigations into the death of a four-year old boy who sustained a significant head injury at a house in Limerick last Saturday.

Gardai said the boy passed away at Children’s Hospital Ireland, Temple Street, Dublin, Tuesday.

The boy was named locally as Mason O’Connell from Rathbane, Limerick.

A gofundme account has been set up to organise funds for the boy’s funeral.

“Gardaí at Roxboro Road, Limerick, are investigating all the circumstances surrounding an incident where a male child (4 years) suffered fatal injuries at a house in Rathbane, Limerick on Saturday, 13th March 2021,” said a garda spokeswoman.

“The boy passed away at Children’s Hospital Ireland at Temple Street earlier today, Tuesday 16th March 2021,” she added.

Gardai said the results of a post mortem on the boy’s body “will determine the course of the investigation”.

“Investigating Gardaí maintain an open mind in this investigation. An Garda Síochána is not providing any further information at this time,” added the spokeswoman.

The boy’s family along with their neighbours and friends have been left shell-shocked by his death.
“It’s awful news to hear that a small little boy has died, a young life lost, and my heart goes out to the family, and their friends, and the neighbours in the area who are all just in shock,” said local Fianna Fáil councillor Catherine Slattery.
“It’s awful, very, very sad,” she added.
Gardai said the boy was initially rushed by ambulance to University Hospital Limerick, and then transferred to Cork University Hospital, before he was transferred onto hospital in Dublin as his condition continued to worsen over the weekend.

A garda statement on Monday said the boy “sustained serious life threatening injuries” at a house in Rathbane, an area on the south of Limerick city.

An informed source said the boy had suffered “a significant head injury” after an apparent fall at his home.
