On This Day: Disappointment for the Hurlers in 2015 as U21 Footballers lose in 12′

March 14

On this day in 2015 Limerick’s promotion hopes were severely dented and the U21 Footballers were on the wrong side of 2-7 to 0-10 scoreline three years previous to that.

Limerick’s promotion hopes were dashed as they fell to a 1-21 to 0-21 defeat by Offaly in the fourth round of the National Hurling League.

The writing was on the wall just a minute into the game when Shane Dowling was sent off for an off the ball incident.

Limerick regrouped quickly and were 0-8 to 0-4 clear after 24 minutes.

But then Offaly got the games only goal as Emmet Nolan fired home. This was followed by three points on the bounce from the Leinster side as they moved in front.

The visitors would respond again and four unanswered saw them head into the dressing rooms with a 0-12 to 1-7 advantage.

Ten minutes into the second half and Limerick had furthered their lead to three points despite their numerical disadvantage.

But fatigue would begin to tell and Offaly hit eight on the trot to move 1-20 to 0-18 ahead.

Limerick did have three of the final four scores but Offaly held out for the valuable win.

Goals proved the difference as Clare overcame Limerick 2-7 to 0-10 in the Munster U21 Football semi-final in the Gaelic Grounds.

Eoghan O’Connor had Limerick off the mark after 30 seconds but after 15 the sides were deadlocked at 0-3 apiece.

Clare senior hurler Cathal McInerny then struck for goal to push Clare ahead in the 16th minute.

That goal was the difference as they lead 1-5 to 0-5 at the short whistle.

Francis O’Riordan, Eoghan O’Connor and Derry O’Connor pointed on the restart as Limerick drew level again.

But once more McInerny was on hand with his second goal of the game to push the Banner in front.

O’Connor added another score late on but it prove too little too late for Limerick as Clare avenged their defeat at the same stage of the championship the previous year.
