EMERALD AC duo Ciara Neville and Sarah Lavin will represent Ireland at next month’s European Indoor Championships next month after being chosen on the 24 strong team.
Both are coached by Noelle Morrissey.
The 2021 championships are to be held in Torun in Poland from March 5-7.
Neville will compete in the 60m sprint and qualified for the event after recording a personal best in Vienna at the end of January.
Her time of 7.30 was a PB as she won both her races on the day.
Four years ago, a then 17-year-old Neville reached the semi-finals of the European Championships in Belgrade.
She will be joined in Poland next month by teammate Sarah Lavin who has been in equally impressive form this year breaking her PB numerous times in qualifying for the Euros.
Lavin first bested her time in Vienna clocking in at 8.24 in the 60m hurdles at the end of January.
After posting a PB in Vienna, Lavin knocked 0.03 off her time for third in her heat in Ostrava at the World Indoor Series Silver Meet the following week.
In the race, she would again record a PB with her time of 8.18 in the 60m hurdles which was enough for third place and qualification at the championships.
She has continued her early season form posting a time of 8.21 over the weekend at the National Indoor Arena.
Oon the team announcement, Athletics Ireland High Performance Director Paul McNamara said:
“It has been a remarkable indoor season so far in 2021, for many reasons, and this is reflected in both the size and quality of the team travelling to Poland. Despite higher qualification standards and fewer opportunities to compete, Irish athletes nailed their opportunity when it presented itself, most notably this past weekend at the Irish Life Health Elite Micro-Meet, and we now have an unprecedented 24 athletes who have earned selection for the 2021 European Athletics Indoor Championships, with many more who have posted qualification standards missing out due to the 3-athlete-per-event limit”.
