Throwback: Limerick & Waterford play out pulsating draw in National Hurling League opener

February 14

On this day six years ago, Limerick and Waterford played out an entertaining draw to start the 2015 National Hurling League.

2015

Limerick and Waterford left the Gaelic Grounds with a share of the spoil after playing out a 2-16 to 0-22 draw in their National League opener.

Limerick had the perfect start as David Reidy goaled from the penalty spot inside the opening minute.

Gavin O’Mahony was in top form at centre-forward and hit over four of his five points in the first half.

But the half overall belonged to the Deise who were four clear at the break, leading 0-14 to 1-7.

Waterford led four points on six different occasions on the night and did so after David Reidy levelled with his second penalty after 48 minutes.

But Limerick reeled the away side in and led by two approaching injury time. Austin Gleeson and Pauric Mahony levelled before Richie McCarthy’s huge strike looked to have won the game for the Shanonsiders.

Yet, there was time for one more score as the sides settled for the draw.

Neither would earn promotion as Cork secured top spot in the division.
