TREATY United Football Club have announced that they are expressing an interest in applying for an Airtricity League First Division licence for the 2021 season in a hugely positive development for soccer in the mid-west region.
Treaty United have been in existence in an official capacity for 10 months and set-up Women’s Senior and U-17 teams who are competing in the 2020 Women’s National League and under-17 league.
The long-term goal of the club is to restore men’s senior football in the region and to provide a platform for the sustainable running of the football club.
In the official statement, the club outlined their aims for the immediate future.
“Treaty United would like to confirm that they will formally express their interest in applying for a First Division League of Ireland licence.
The opportunity to apply for a licence is very welcome by the Treaty United board, it has always been the ambition to return men’s senior soccer to the mid-west region.”
Dave Rooney has been managing Treaty United Senior Women’s side throughout 2020The club statement paid homage to the performance of the senior and underage sides this season and praised the progression thus far. Treaty United also mentioned that they have been in constant communication with many supportive stakeholders who have backed the club’s ambitions.
“We have held several productive meetings with key stakeholders in recent months including very positive support from Limerick City and County Council and the owners of the Markets Field Stadium, the LEDP among others.”
The LEDP Chief Exective Niall O’Callaghan has publicly supported the possibility of a return of men’s senior soccer to the Markets Field and is hopeful that Treaty United will be successful in achieving this goal.
“We are delighted to confirm our support of Treaty United to facilitate men’s soccer once again at the Markets Field Stadium. I want to wish Treaty United the very best of luck with their application and we are very much looking forward to senior men’s League of Ireland football in the future at this famous ground.”
The relationship between the LEDP and Treaty United is a welcome development this year and the Market’s Field pitch, which was voted Airtricity League pitch of the year in 2016, is in superb condition at present and needs national recognition.
Speaking to Sporting Limerick, Treaty United Chairman Conn Murray was delighted to announce that the club would be expressing an interest in applying for a licence to compete in the second tier of Irish football in 2021.
“It is an important day for Treaty and it is a day that has been coming for a while. It’s an opportunity for us to express our interest very clearly in bringing senior men’s League of Ireland soccer back to the mid-west.”
