LIMERICK city will hostย a redesigned and innovativeย Limerick Jazz Festival,ย in September asย organisersย have adaptedย the festivalย to the new world following Covid-19.ย
The ninth annual festival runs for the week of 21 โ 27 September.ย
The festival has been redesigned in a very innovative way to respond to the restrictions imposed by the need to avoid the spread of Covid-19.ย
This yearโs highlightsย include:ย
The final of Young Irish Jazz Musician 2020 in University Concert Hall, Limerickย on the evening of Saturdayย 26ย September.ย This is the first of what is planned to be a regularย eventย to give a platform to the best of emergingย Irishย jazz talent.ย The competition is open to young jazz musicians aged 13 to 18 and details of how to apply can be found atย www.limerickjazzfestival.com/youngjazzmusician.ย
Theย Young Irish Jazz Musician 2020ย will get to make a professional studio recording,ย participateย in UCHโs Rising Starsย Concert,ย andย receive a bursaryย to take part in an international summer school.ย
From Monday to Fridayย weย willย support the Irish jazz community byย hostingย online premieres of performancesย by leading musiciansย from across the island and abroad. Performers will include:ย

Onย Sunday 27th Dolanโs Warehouse will host a great afternoon of live music featuring the Joe OโCallaghan Trio, Michael Buckleyโs House of Horns, Christine Tobin and Phil Robson and a first Limerick Jazz Festival appearance for Mary Coughlan.ย
Riverdance composer Bill Whelanย welcomed the announcement of this yearโs festival: โLimerick Jazz Festival has its roots in theย vibrantย localย music scene. Thisย yearโs online events are a welcome shot in the arm for theย entireย jazz communityย in Ireland.ย Young Irish Jazz Musicianย 2020ย is a great way of showcasing the young talent being developed across the country by many highly dedicated jazz educators.โย

Limerick Jazz Festival is partnering with the Improvised Music Company for the Young Jazz Musician 2020ย ย

Limerick Jazz Society is the longest continually active jazz society in Ireland and celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2012 with the first Limerick Jazz Festival. Its regular spring and autumn seasons feature performances by leading international and Irish performers. Since 2007 it has also provided jazz education programs through Limerick Jazz Workshop, the only regular jazz workshop in Ireland outside Dublin.ย Limerick Jazz Society is a registered charity.ย
