GRANAGH Players return to Granagh Community Centre with ‘The Government Inspector’ for another three-night weekend. ‘The Government Inspector’ stages nightly from this Friday 31 into Sunday February 2 and doors open 7.30pm for the 8pm performance.
Producer Jimmy Sheehy steers this 13th production for Granagh that was written in 1836 by Nikolai Gogol. It is adapted by the drama company for an Irish setting in the 1970s and ’80s and the nub is: “The unexpected visit of a Government Inspector causes ructions in the town, namely because the local administrators are corrupt and self-serving.”
The townspeople push-back because “all the characters in this place are concerned, above all else, with preserving or improving their own status, reputation and if applicable, fortune. They engage in lies, accept bribes, mock and criticise others, exhibit vanity and neglect their duties.
“For them, the welfare of the town and the townspeople comes second to making sure that they have feathered their own nests.”
Ah, well. You will never mistake this south Limerick village for being a sleepy hollow again. Tickets on the door are €10 / €5, student.
