Update: Gardaí investigation underway after boy found dead in Limerick

A MAJOR Garda investigation is underway after the body of a boy was discovered in a house in Limerick City tonight.

The boy, believed to be aged 11 years old, was found with multiple injuries according to a reliable Garda source. It is understood the boy was fatally assaulted.

A man in his late 20s has been arrested by gardai in connection with the boy’s death.

Sources said the boy and the man were well known to one another.

Gardaí are at the scene on the Shanabooly Road, Ballynanty.

Update 10:53pm:

A Garda spokesman confirmed Gardaí  “arrested a man in his 20s following a fatal assault in Limerick”.

“Shortly after 7pm Gardaí discovered a body of a boy at a house in the Ballynanty area of Limerick City. He was pronounced dead at the scene a short time later,” they said.

“Gardaí are investigating all of the circumstances of his death.”

“Following the discovery a man in his late 20s was arrested by investigating Gardaí. He is currently detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984 at Henry Street Garda Station.”

“The scene is preserved for a forensic and technical examination and the services of both the Office of the State Pathologist and Garda Technical Bureau have been requested.”

“The investigation is ongoing.”

Update 11:24pm:

Garda sources said the boy’s body will remain at the house overnight.

The state pathologist will carry out a preliminary examination of the body at the house on Monday morning.
