Veterans face airport charges

-

TWO army veterans facing charges of criminal damage to a fence at Shannon Airport have applied to have their trial heard in Dublin rather than Clare.

US war veterans,  Ken Mayers of Monte Alto Road, Santa Fe, New Mexico and 77-year-old Tarak Kauff of Arnold Drive, Woodstock, New York are facing charges of trespass and damage to a fence at on March 17 last.

Both are involved in the Veterans for Peace organisation and are unable to return to the USA because of bail conditions imposed following their arrest.

At a hearing in Ennis this week, Judge Gerald Keys was told that the two men intend to apply to have the case against them heard in Dublin rather than in Clare and that there is a precedent for such a move.

Counsel for the State argued that the case should be heard locally and that the two, who were described as elderly men, should be excused from attending court when the case next comes up for mention.

Judge Keys adjourned the case to October 29  when a date will be set for the hearing and a decision made on where the case will be heard.
