STUDENTS arriving for the new term in Limerick’s third-level institutions have been the victims of ‘scam’ by sham landlords.
Gardaí have warned students not to hand over large deposits until they are satisfied that the transaction is bona fide.
A number of students have been robbed. The most common scam is for a landlord to demand a deposit in advance of showing the property and students desperate to get scarce accommodation agree to pay.
The Garda advice is to meet the landlord on the premises, make sure keys fit the property and that a renting lease is signed before parting with money.
Tenants should also use cheques or bank drafts to pay and keep photocopies of these and any receipts.
