Limerick FC have been rewarded for their first round victory over Munster Senior League side Cobh Wanderers with a trip to the North-East to face Sligo Rovers at the Showgrounds in the FAI Senior Cup second round. The draw was conducted at FAI HQ in Abbotstown on Monday evening.
Limerick were 0-1 victors at St. Colmans Park on Friday over Cobh Wanderers thanks to a goal from youngster Edmond O’Dwyer with ten minutes to go.
Sligo are currently 6th in the Airtricity League Premier Division and will prove to be tough opposition for Tommy Barrett’s out of form side to overturn. Last season, the Shannonsiders defeated Sligo at the Showgrounds on the opening game of the season with Darren Dennehy grabbing a second half winner. Barrett’s team also gained a 0-0 draw at the venue in May of last season before relegation struck in November.
A surprise victory in the tie would see Limerick reach the quarter final stage of the competition for the third season running following a quarter-final defeat to Dundalk in 2018 and a semi-final defeat to Cork in 2017.
The tie will be played on the weekend ending 25th August with a time and day to be announced in due course.
