Limerick’s senior camogie side lost their first championship game of the season after falling to Galway on a 2-12 to 1-10 scoreline in Athenry.
Declan Nash’s side were two points up after 14 points after a strong start, but Ailish O’Reilly’s goal put Galway into the ascendancy.
O’Reilly netted for a second time nine minutes into the second half and despite a late goal from a Niamh Mulcahy free, Limerick were unable to make a dramatic comeback.
Karen O’Leary and Carrie Dolan exchanged frees early on, but two Mulcahy frees and another for O’Leary put Limerick 0-4 to 0-2 in front.
However, O’Reilly finally finished a goal chance for the home side to help them to a 1-5 to 0-5 advantage at the break.
Sophie O’Callaghan had an early goal chance for Limerick in the second half, but was unable to find the target.
Limerick were punished soon after when O’Reilly found a way past Laura O’Neill for her second goal.
The introduction of Roisin Ambrose and Rebecca Delee gave Limerick some much needed impetus up front, but Limerick’s rally from Mulcahy’s goal came too late.
Limerick play Kilkenny in their final group game away from home this coming Saturday.
