No luck for Limerick sides in Kennedy Cup

There was little joy for all three Limerick Schoolboy League sides competing at the annual Kennedy Cup U-14 tournament at the University of Limerick on day 2 of the event.

There were no victories and four defeats across the board for Limerick District, Desmond and County Schoolboy Leagues.

Limerick District Schoolboy League remained unbeaten in the group stage following consecutive scoreless draws with West Cork and North Dublin on Wednesday. Limerick went into their final group game against North Dublin knowing that they needed a victory to advance to the Cup quarter-final.

However, the vital goal wouldn’t arrive for Noel O’Connor’s men and North Dublin also missed a penalty to keep it on level terms.

As a result, the District League will compete in the bowl quarter-finals on Thursday at 3pm against South Belfast Youth League following a second place finish in their group. The game will take place on pitch 4. If Limerick progress to the semi-final of the bowl, they will face either Wexford or the Midlands on Friday on pitch 1 (12.30).

Despite a promising start with a 1-1 draw with Sligo/Leitrim on Tuesday evening, the Desmond League will be competing in the trophy quarter-finals following two defeats this afternoon.

Carlow defeated Billy O’Sullivan’s side 3-0 with Jack Feehan and a brace from Peter Grogan accounting for the Carlow goals. Things didn’t improve for O’Sullivan’s side in the evening session as Donegal heaped another 3-0 misery on the Limerick side.

There was also bad news for Limerick County Schoolboy League who suffered a second consecutive defeat at the hands of Kildare District League on Wednesday afternoon. This evening, despite taking the lead against Clare, they were pegged back with Ben McDonagh among the scorers and lost out by 3 goals to 1.

Both defeats for Timmy Ranisford’s team means that they will join their Desmond League counterparts in the trophy quarter-finals which take place at 11 o’clock on Thursday morning.

Limerick Desmond League will take on North Tipperary on pitch 4 while Limerick County will take on North Eastern Counties on pitch 1. Both will be looking to progress to the trophy semi-finals which will take place at 10.30 on Friday morning.
