LIVERPOOL’S Champions League comeback against Barcelona had the majority of football fans in shock on Tuesday evening.
However, one astute Limerick punter could be forgiven for saying ‘I told you so’ after landing a truly remarkable wager.
Jurgen Klopp’s men found themselves 3-0 down from the first leg and needed a fast start at Anfield. Divock Origi scored after only seven minutes, setting up a stunning 4-0 victory that sent the Reds to the Champions League Final against all the odds.
The extraordinary turn of events came as no surprise to the anonymous Limerick punter, who had placed a €20 bet in their local BoyleSports shop on Tuesday afternoon on Divock Origi to score the first goal of the game and Liverpool to seal the deal with a 4-0 victory.
The bet was facing odds of 215/1, but Trent Alexander-Arnold’s quick thinking from the corner that led to the fourth goal left the customer with an agonising wait for the final whistle.
When it finally arrived, once again courtesy of Origi, the unlikely bet clicked and allowed them to return to the shop on Wednesday to collect a tidy total of €4,320.
Lawrence Lyons of BoyleSports said there were a few optimists who backed Liverpool to win 4-0 at odds of 50/1.
“A huge pat on the back goes to one of our punters in Limerick who nailed the 4-0 scoreline along with Origi scoring first at odds of 215/1. It was a cracking bet and I wonder if they could advise us on this weekend’s Lotto numbers.”
