A MAN has been arrested after a Garda was stabbed in a Limerick housing estate on Sunday night.
Gardai were responding to an incident on Sunday evening at the Bruach na Sionna housing estate in Castleconnell when a male Garda member was stabbed.
The male officer was taken to University Hospital Limerick and treated for his injuries where his condition is understood to be stable.
A short time later, a male was arrested and brought to Henry Street Garda Station for questioning.
Limerick Fine Gael Senator Maria Byrne reacted to the news saying that she was “alarmed to learn that a Garda has been stabbed in Castleconnell last night. My thoughts are with the victim and his family at this time.
“A stabbing like this in residential areas like Bruach na Sionna in Castleconnell which is full of children, is something which would strike fear into the heart of any parent.
“I am shocked to hear a Garda has been stabbed in the line of duty and the obvious disregard for law and order. I hope to see justice done here and those responsible for this put behind bars,” Senator Byrne said.
“I have been campaigning for extra policing resources for Limerick City East and I will be raising this matter again with the Minister for Justice Charlie Flanagan TD following the events of last evening.”
