THE Irish Life insurance company paid out €6.2 million to customers and their families affected by injury, illness and death in Limerick during 2018.
According to its annual claims report published this week, the company paid out €4.5 million in life insurance to the families of 64 people who died in Limerick.
€1.7 million was paid to 29 specified illness claimants in Limerick.
Cancer was the biggest cause of life insurance and specified illness claims in Limerick, while the average age of death claims was 64 years, and 53 for specified illness claims.
The figures show that women in Ireland claimed at an earlier age than men with the average age for female specified illness claims, just 51 years old, four years earlier than men.
The research also revealed that people in Ireland are financially under-covered with half having no life insurance cover at all, and only one in five have enough savings to get by in the case of serious illness or injury.
