Garryowen moved into fourth in the AIL table after a dramatic late penalty try saw them to a 30-29 victory over Shannon in a sensational derby at Dooradoyle.
The Light Blues looked to be heading for a defeat as they trailled 29-18 after 67 minutes but Kevin Seymour’s try gave Conan Doyle’s side hope in the final stages.
Garryowen then piled on the pressure in remaining minutes and that pressure eventually told with a penalty try seeing them to the vital win.
Shannon drew first blood through an excellent Jake Flannery score but Garryowen soon levelled through Mike O’Donnell.
The Parish went back in front thanks to Ethan Moloney but again Garryowen hit back with a fine Cian O’Shea try.
Flannery looked to have given Shannon the advantage in the lead up to half time only for Diarmuid Barron’s excellent five pointer in the left corner giving Garryowen a 15-13 lead at the break.
Two Flannery penalties either side of a Ben Healy strike from the kicking tee had Shannon a point in front early in the second half, before tries from Craig Casey and Patrick Ryan looked to have seen Tom Hayes’ side to victory but Garryowen’s late salvo saw them to the bonus point win.
After the game, Doyle said he never lost faith in his side despite it looking bleak going into the final 10 minutes.
“I thought we had enough time if we scored early, which we did. I thought we had been effective in getting over the try line once we got good opportunities.
“I thought we managed the game well near the end. Didn’t panic and played down in their ’22. There was still a decent wind at that stage. We used that well, got possession and did well to get both scores. It was a good finish.”
