LOCAL businesses, schools and civic buildings are being encouraged to ‘Purple Up’ in support of the 16 days of Action against Violence against Women in Limerick.
The programme of events runs from Sunday, November 25, which is International Day against Violence against Women, to Monday, December 10, which is International Human Rights Day.
The Aim of the 2018 ‘Purple-Up Limerick’ campaign is to highlight the prevalence of violence against women in Limerick and show solidarity with those who are affected by abuse and violence in their close relationships.
It also aims to turn the spotlight on abusers and send a message to them that Limerick will not tolerate abuse of our women and girls.
Shops, schools, colleges, community centres, credit unions, banks, offices, organisations, are asked to dress their windows or a small area in their premises, – purple balloons and crepe paper streamers will be provided – and display an A3 poster supporting the campaign.
The organisers are also asking organisations and individuals to share a picture on Facebook.
As part of the campaign, Limerick Local Area Network on Violence Against Women (LAN) is planning a rally in the city centre on Tuesday, November 27 at the junction of O’Connell Street and Thomas Street.
216 lights will be lit and the names read out, in memory of the 216 women who have died violently in Ireland in since 1996 and a minute’s silence will be observed in memory of those stolen lives.
People will wear purple, carry purple flags and banners to the rally which will be held from 1 to 2 pm. Many men’s and women’s groups and clubs, from all over the county will participate. The Northside Men’s Shed members have made placards for the event while purple balloons and sashes will be worn by others.
