AN operation targeting organised crime has led to the seizure of a large quantity of drugs valued at almost a quarter of million euro and the arrest of a foreign national.
Revenue officers seized 12kgs of herbal cannabis with an estimated street value of €240,000 during operations in Limerick and Louth.
On Wednesday evening during an intelligence led operation, Revenue officers seized approximately 9kgs of herbal cannabis with an estimated value of €178,000 in Limerick City.
The illegal drugs were found in a package during a search carried out, under warrant, with the assistance of the Garda National Drugs and Organised Crime Bureau and the Garda Drugs Unit from the Limerick Division.
A 45-year old Nigerian man was arrested at the scene by Gardai and was brought to Henry Street Garda Station where he was detained under the provisions of section 2 of the Criminal Justice(Drug Trafficking) Act 1996.
The second seizure on €60,000 worth of cannabis was made in Louth and a 55-year-old man was arrested.
Investigations into the drug seizure is ongoing.
These seizures are part of ongoing intelligence led joint operations by Revenue’s Customs Service, the Garda National Drugs and Organised Crime Bureau, and the Special Crime Task Force, targeting the importation of illegal drugs.
