IT was proposed at County Hall this week that the local authority provide €5,000 for each municipal district to lay on spreads for civic receptions in their 2019 Budget.
The proposal was mooted by all six councillors from the Adare/Rathkeale Municipal District at this Monday’s full meeting of Limerick City and County Council.
Fianna Fail councillor Kevin Sheahan pointed out that funds for civic receptions were currently coming out of the district offices’ annual budget.
Independent councillor John Gilligan was totally against the idea.
“This is not acceptable”, he declared.
“We have two mayors in the city and if you start adding civic receptions for district offices, it will get totally confusing,” he said.
Fine Gael councillor Stephen Keary took the view that the money is “expendable if it is expended”.
“We have a lot of talent in the Adare/Rathkeale area that warrant receptions,” he claimed.
Sinn Fein councillor Séighin Ó Ceallaigh demanded that if €5,000 was to be allocated per municipal district then the local authority take into account that there is three districts (City North, City East, City West) in the Metropolitan District of Limerick City and County Council.
“If he can’t have a lollipop none of us can have a lollipop,” Cllr Kevin Sheahan replied.
