Limerick string sing out for Ireland

-

LIMERICK pupils from the Irish Chamber Orchestra’s Sing Out with Strings programme will embark on the adventure of a lifetime, representing Ireland, at the Sistema European Youth Orchestra Residency 2018, in the UK.

Taking place from the 17 to 29 August, the recipients of the residency are, Niamh Toner, Leona Purcell, Sophie Dillon, Jasmine O’Carroll Dillon, Alannah Purcell, Clara Dillon, Uzoma Obi Kabi and Buki Adejomehin.

The Limerick participants studied at Le Cheile N.S., Presentation N.S. and are now attending Coláiste Nano Nagle where they are continuing their music studies through scholarship schemes and school funding.

This residency brings two hundred 10 to 21-year-old musicians and 50 teachers from Sistema music programmes in fifteen countries to London and Birmingham, celebrating the power of music to unite nations, cultures and young people.

The girls will join other aspiring young musicians from many nations to form a Youth Symphony Orchestra, rehearsing and performing together, tutored by some of the world’s top professional musicians.

The 10-day course culminates in performances at the Birmingham Symphony Hall and the Southbank, London.

Principal of Royal Birmingham Conservatoire and Founder of Sistema England Julian Lloyd Webber, said “This magnificent and extraordinary international cultural collaboration proves once again that music has no barriers of language or politics, and we are proud to join forces with Symphony Hall in August to give a platform to this unique orchestra that will represent the vital Sistema movement in Europe.”

The Irish Chamber Orchestra’s Sing Out with Strings initiative provides weekly workshops in singing, songwriting and violin and cello tuition to 300 Limerick city children annually.
