Limerick strongman outmuscles his UK rivals

PA O’Dwyer from Newcastle West has created history by becoming the first Irishman to claim the title of the strongest man in the UK.

The 32-year-old, who eats seven raw eggs every morning, has been Ireland’s strongest man for the last three years and he added to his domination of the Irish circuit by taking the UK title after three days of competition in St Alban’s north of London last weekend.

Tractor pulls, bar bends and tyre flipping were just some of the 15 strength and endurance tests undertaken by the international line-up.

Extending thanks to the organisers of the best show he ever attended, he also paid tribute “to the thousands of fans that showed up and supported the event.

“Thank you so much for all the kind messages. Thank you and to my family, kids and the gal who support me all the way”.

After taking the Irish strongman circuit by storm, he recently took the dead-lift title when he lifted 520kg, just 4kg short of the world record.

Consuming 10,000 calories a day and up to 60 chicken fillets a week, the “Limerick Lion” credited his win to his family and friends and the thousands of supporters who cheered him on.

In his 11th year of competition, Pa O’Dwyer has been reaping the rewards of his efforts and strict training and diet regime.

He explained that he was living the social life at 21 until the birth of his first child and then he knew he “needed to straighten myself out, so I started going to the gym,”

“I’ve never gone more than three days without the gym since then. I just fell in love with it. I was only 11 stone then, but I educated myself in diet and fitness and my now I’ve gotten stronger.”

And then there’s the strongman diet. Seven raw eggs are accompanied by a scoop of protein powder and milk at 6am with food stops every two to three hours.

When he entered his first competition at 26 years of age, he was placed third on the podium and, having now bulked up to 23 stone, it seems that the Limerick Lion is on the prowl for bigger game.
