Professor Kevin R Murphy, Department of Work and Employment Studies,ย University of Limerick delivered his Inaugural lecture on 30thย April 2018.
An Inaugural lecture is an occasion of significance in an academic staff memberโs career at UL, providing newly appointed professors with the opportunity to inform colleagues, the campus community and the general public of their work to date, including current research and future plans.ย In his talk โWhy We Study Workโ, Professor Murphy described five broad themes that underly research in the Department of Work and Employment Studies argued for the importance of building better, healthier organizations. ย He outlined many of the challenges inherent in the task and underscored the relationship between this goal and the core missions of the University of Limerick.
Professor Murphyย earned his PhDย in Psychologyย fromย The Pennsylvania State Universityย in 1979,ย andย has served on the faculties of Rice University, New York University,ย Pennsylvania State Universityย and Colorado State University. Heย is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association, the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology and the American Psychological Society, andย the recipient of the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychologyโs 2004 Distinguished Scientific Contribution Award.ย ย He is the author of over one hundred andย ninetyย articles and book chapters, and author or editor of eleven books, in areas ranging from psychometrics and statistical analysis to individual differences, performance assessmentย and honesty in the workplace.
Heย hasย served as President of the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology andย Editor ofย Journal of Applied Psychologyย andย ofย Industrial and Organizational Psychology: Perspectives on Science and Practice,ย and isย a member of numerousย editorialย boards.
Throughout his career, Dr. Murphy has worked toย advance both research and the application of that research to solve practical problems in organizations.
For example, heย served asย both a member and theย Chair of theย U.S.ย Department of Defense Advisory Committee on Military Personnel Testing, and has also served onย fiveย U.S.ย National Academy of Sciences committees, allย of which dealtย with problems in the workplace.
He hasย carried out a number of research projects with military and national security organizations, dealing with problems ranging from training to applying research on motivation to problems of nuclear deterrence, and has worked with numerous private and public-sector organizations to build and evaluate their human resource management systems.ย ย He is a frequent contributor toย RTE Brainstorm, publishing articles on a broad range of topics relevant to understanding behavior inย organization.
