MARKING the 50th anniversary of the civil and political protest events of May 1968, the Alliance Française Limerick (AFL) will host ‘Au Cœur de Mai 68’, an exhibition based on the contemporary photographs of Philippe Gras.
The launch will be at the Hunt Museum Café tomorrow, Tuesday May 1 at 11.30 am and the show will run until May 28.
Civil unrest in May 1968 against the nationalist government of President Charles de Gaulle spread through the student movement and into factory strikes, affecting 11mn industrial workers. Artistic expression of the people’s activism emerged in song, graffiti, posters and comment and the period is considered a defining turning point in France’s (then) cultural shift to the left and centre.
Party to 1968 commemorations across the globe, AFL will show ‘A Strange Spring of 1968’, a documentary in French and subtitled in English by the French historian and director Dominique Beaux on Sunday May 13 at 3pm in the Captain’s Room, again at the Hunt Museum.
Booking is through the Alliance at Pery Square and online for this screening is essential although the event is not ticketed.
