Bon Secours Health System presented its first Sports Medicine Symposium on Saturday in Thomond Park Limerick.
This Symposium debated the ethical dilemma facing coaches and medical professionals in determining the right time for professional athletes and amateur sports players to return to play.Leading experts from the GAA, IRFU, the English Sports Institute, Bon Secours Health System medical professionals and academics explored topics from concussion injury to hip, ankle, knee and common sports related hand injuries. It also provided the launch pad for the Bon Secours Health System new Sports Medicine Service.
The theme of this conference is Return to Play criteria, integral for strategic decision making for sports medicine clinicians and managers alike. This symposium provided a national forum for the discussion of current best practice, new research and clinical reasoning in the area of sports injury management and concussion. Conference speakers included Orthopaedic Consultants, Chartered Physiotherapists, Sports Psychologists, Sports Medicine researchers and senior sports managers and players, all experts in their respective fields.

Bon Secours announced its new Sports Medicine Service. This new patient centred service will provide rapid access to sports injury treatment in multiple Bon Secours sites across the country. Gp’s, physiotherapists, sports clubs and patients themselves will have rapid access to Clinical Specialist Physiotherapist triage, followed by radiology, consultant review and surgery if necessary. The service is being developed and piloted in Bon Secours Cork, Galway and Tralee and will be expanded to all Bon Secours sites nationwide subsequently.
Leaders in their field such as Dr Phil Glasgow , head Physiotherapist IRFU, Dr Lee Herrington, English Institute of Sports, Dr Pat O’Neill, Sports Physician debated these and other topics side by side with Orthopaedic Surgeons, Chartered Physiotherapists and Consultant Radiologists from Bon Secours hospitals across the country. Input was given from sports psychologists, managers and high level players. David Wallace former Munster Irish and British and Irish Lions rugby player also joined the discussion where he highlighted and give tips on how to get back to play physically and how to get mentally back to full confidence following injury.
