TWO thirds of cars broken in to outside Limerick homes over the last two years were unlocked, new figures from An Garda Siochana show as an appeal to “park smart” is renewed.
An Garda Síochána is appealing to motorists to park smart in residential areas after the figures show targeted cars were left unlocked by the owner.
The local figures correspond with the national average released from the Garda Analysis Service that 38 per cent of vehicles parked at residential locations were unlocked at the time they were broken into between 2015 and 2017.
The majority of the thefts occurred between 12midnight and 7am where the property stolen included cash, laptops, tools, sunglasses, jewellery and sports equipment.
Gardaí are appealing for all vehicle owners to ensure they lock their vehicle no matter where it is parked. Do not store valuables in the car, but if you do have to, keep them out of sight.
