THE FIRST sneak preview of the set to be smash hit Netflix series, ‘Nightflyers’, has been released, in a project that is set to employ upwards of 500 people and generate €70 million for the local economy.
The series is currently being filmed at Limerick’s Troy Studios and, a spokesperson for the project said,”filming is likely to continue for about eight months”.
Based on “Game of Thrones’ author, George R. R. Martin’s novella, Nightflyers is set in the future on the eve of Earth’s destruction. A crew of explorers journey on the most advanced ship in the galaxy, The Nightflyer, to intercept a mysterious alien spacecraft that might hold the key to their survival. As the crew nears their destination, they discover that the ship’s artificial intelligence and never-seen captain may be steering them into deadly and unspeakable horrors deep in the dark reaches of space.
The author has expressed a desire to visit the Limerick set but this is unlikely in the immediate future.
Martin will be credited as an exec producer, though he is not expected to have a heavy hand in Nightflyers given his overall deal with HBO, where he’s currently co-writing two of the four potential Game of Thrones follow-ups in the works.
The production includes Irish talent such as Eoin Macken as Karl D’Branin and Brían F. O’Byrne as Auggie, alongside major international stars.
Speaking about the series, Martin described ‘Nightflyers’ as “Psycho in space”.
