IFI Screens Journey’s End
JOURNEY’S End is based on RC Sherriff’s classic play on the futility of war. Northern France, 1918. British Army C Company is anxiously awaiting an imminent German offensive, led by the broken, alcoholic Captain Stanhope (Sam Claflin), and former school teacher Osborne (Paul Bettany), his avuncular second-in-command. The company is joined by the naïve young Second Lieutenant Raleigh (Asa Butterfield), who requested assignment to Stanhope’s command because the two attended the same school.
R.C. Sherriff’s poignant drama of life and death in the trenches, first performed on stage starring a young Laurence Olivier in 1928, and filmed in 1930 by James Whale, is faithfully adapted by director Saul Dibb in this “restrained production that retains the deep sadness of the play and wisely resists contemporary embellishments,” says IFI’s David O’Mahony.
Journey’s End screens at Belltable this Monday March 5 at 8pm.
Anne Rynne
THIS week’s special guest at The Acoustic Club is singer/ songwriter Anne Rynne.
A member of a legendary ‘singing’ family, Anne is a sister of Christy Moore.
She was always very shy when asked to sing, so much so that for most of her life she didn’t really sing. Then one day her brother handed her a guitar saying …..”I’m not giving you this, I’m loaning it to you for 50 years, on condition that you play it every day”.
Anne grasped this challenge with both hands and it has “changed her life”.
Since then with great help from her song pal, Doutsen Roelofs, Anne learned to play guitar and has learned a bunch of songs.
She says that the secret to learning the guitar is to pick it up every single day and play. Her brother Barry has been a great mentor and his advice has really helped her to get beyond her shyness and find her voice.
”Remember, Sis, that you are the messenger, that you need to remove yourself personally from the song” ….instantly Anne could feel a huge shift. Anne Rynne plays The Acoustic Club this Tuesday March 6 at Charlie Malone’s Bar, Wolfe Tone Street
