Limerick Senator Kieran O’Donnell has been approached by residents living on the Old Cork road about the inadequate City Bus Eireann service for their area.
“Residents on the Old Cork Road have been in contact with me about the need for the provision of an improved City Bus Eireann service for their area. I have followed up on this request with Bus Éireann, Limerick.
“Up to a number of years ago there was a designated daily City Bus Eireann servicing the needs of the local community along the Old Cork road. However, this was discontinued and the area has since been serviced as part of a County Bus Eireann route to Kilfinane. However, with awkward and not enough bus stop times on the Kilfinane bus Eireann route (into City: 8.21, 12.51 & 17.11 and out from City: 10.30, 16.15 & 17.40) , this has caused a great degree of hardship and inconvenience.
“Many residents are elderly and rely heavily on public transport and need an appropriate bus service. For instance, they found the previous morning bus time into city of 10am and return at 1pm far more suitable to their needs.
“Bus Éireann Limerick is currently carrying out a review of all city wide bus routes. I met with Bláithin McElligott, Service Manager, Bus Éireann, Limerick on Tuesday last, 30thJanuary 2018, to discuss the situation. As part of this review, she has committed to looking at the restoration of a proper Georgian Village/Old Cork road to City Centre bus route which would include bus times suitable to residents needs.
“I have emphasised to Bus Eireann that there is an increased demand along the Old Cork road for a bus route into the city centre. From students attending the new third level college on the former St. Enda’s school site together with the newer estates like Derrynane & Rossmore, enhanced demand exists for this city bus service.
“I have followed up on this meeting with an email request to Bus Éireann, setting out the circumstances and request for enchanted bus stop time along the Old Cork road – see Note to Editor below.
“The city bus route that serviced this area for many years needs to be restored as quickly as possible. I will campaign to ensure this happens.
