DUBLIN punk-pop band Pillow Queens are part of an exciting lineup for the ‘Love not Eight’ – music, choice, dance, REPEAL event at Dolan’s Warehouse this Saturday February 3.
‘State of The State’ is the band’s new EP. The recording is the product of Pillow Queens’ first year being a band.
“An intense year of gigging, touring, and really getting to know each other’s abilities fed into this recording,” say the band.
Their spiky pop debut ‘Calm Girls’ EP was recorded just after the band got together and caught the attention of BBC’s Steve Lemaq – “Deceptively infectious, with sharp hooks”.
Bristol indie label Specialist Subject Records got behind the band’s debut output and released it on vinyl, leading to Pillow Queens taking a ten date tour of the UK last summer.
Guitarist Pamela Connolly told Limerick Post that the all-girl band hit the ground running and wrote their live show as the gig offers were rolling in
“We jumped in with our first release without having played live very much at all. We were being offered gigs fairly regularly and we said yes to everything!”
The ‘State of The State’ four track EP will be released via Specialist Subject Records on vinyl and download on March 16.
The first taster of the new collection to go public is ‘Favourite’, a hook laden and sharp tune about self-delusion.
“Lead track ‘Puppets’ fires at the frustration of trying to succeed in post-recession Ireland and the effect that has on mental health,” explains vocalist/ guitarist Sarah Corcoran.
Event organisers for the Love not Eight event state that the night is set to entertain but also start conversations and educate about the “harmful effects of the Eighth Amendment and why everybody deserves the right to full bodily autonomy.”
Pamela explains that the band is ready to help the cause.
“It’s a cause close to all of our hearts really. It’s coming up to a time when people are gonna have to start knocking on doors – and you need to make sure that you have enough money for leaflets. It is a bit of a money game at referendums so anything we can do to help out, we will.”
The Love not Eight features an exciting line up of acts
Onstage with Pillow Queens is Kate McGrew as MC and performances from Mizdrea, Cruiser and Síomha. Later DJ Olivia Chau will be on the decks.
The artists will be raising awareness and raising funds for RepealLK, the Limerick branch of the national campaign to repeal the 8th amendment.
Pamela Connolly of Pillow Queens agrees that it is an exciting time for the band to be lending their voices to the campaign.
“It is a great time to be politically active but it is scary as well. This is not just a vote – this is people’s lives as well. It is fun to do the gig but there is an important issue at the heart of it really.”
