FOR only the second time in its history, the Supreme Court will sit outside of Dublin and hear a number of cases in Limerick next March to coincide with the official opening of the new court complex on Mulgrave Street.
The new multi-million euro Limerick court house complex will become operational and hear cases four weeks before the Supreme Court arrives.
A spokesperson for the Courts Services confirmed to the Limerick Post that the complex will open in the first week in February with the Supreme Court arriving in March for three days of hearings.
Bar Council representative Jack Nicholas BL said that this would mark a unique event.
“This is part of a move to make the highest court in the land more open. It sat in Cork a number of years ago and the fact that this is occurring at the same time the new complex is opening is unique.”
It is expected that once the court complex becomes fully operational, all criminal cases before the Circuit and District courts will be heard at the Mulgrave Street premises and the Central Criminal Court is also expected to sit there to hear the most serious of offences.
The present District Court building at City Hall is likely to be repurposed by Limerick City and County Council ahead of the 2019 local elections.
