Limerick left behind in Governments first time buyers scheme

Limerick TD and Labour Party Housing Spokesperson Jan O’Sullivan says Limerick has once again been forgotten about in the Governments rebranded first time buyers scheme.

Speaking after the announcement by the Housing Minister, Limerick TD O’Sullivan said:
“As with exclusion from the rent pressure zones, it is clear that Limerick is once again at the back of the bus. Under the new scheme, a person or couple can borrow up to 90% of the value of a new, second-hand or self-build home to a maximum of €320,000 in the Greater Dublin area, Cork and Galway area and up to €250,000 in the rest of the country, which includes Limerick..”

“Average house prices in many suburbs of Limerick are higher than €250,000 and the failure of the scheme to actually build affordable housing and at the very least include Limerick as a major city will continue to price hard working people out of the market.”

Deputy O’Sullivan continued: “The Government needs to pro-actively build affordable housing and this scheme amounts to little more than a PR exercise. The Labour Party has consistently argued for NAMA to be turned into a financier, and direct builder of affordable housing for sale or rent, using the expertise already in situ there, and in the Housing Agency and Housing Finance Agency.
