Fianna Fรกil Spokesperson on Employment Affairs and Social Protection, Willie OโDea has said that he hopes that cross-party agreement can be achieved on the new bill to ban the use of zero hour contracts.
And he paid special tribute to his fellow Limerick Fianna Fรกil TD Niall Collins for hisย work to ban zero hour contracts when employment affairs were part of his portfolio.
Deputy O’Dea was commenting after the Minister for Employment Affairs and Social Protection, Regina Doherty published the Employment (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2017 which seeks to address the increased casualisation of work.
โFianna Fรกil sought this piece of legislation during our negotiations that led to us facilitating the Fine Gael minority government,” he explained.
โCasualisation of work has a negative impact on workers and their families. This bill will address some of the challenges that it has brought.
โIt will for all intents and purposes ban the use of zero hour contracts, and ensure that all employees receive clear sight of their basic terms and conditions within one month of commenting a new employment.
โThis bill needs to be passed as quickly as possible to improve workersโ rights and protections. I am calling on all political parties to debate this bill with this requirement in mind, and to work constructively towards its passage,” Deputy O’Dea concluded.
