Sarah Jane Hennelly, the Social Democrats General Election candidate for Limerick City, has been elected as Graduate Representative to the University of Limerick’s Governing Body.

Sarah Jane (29) is a graduate from the University with a Degree in Politics and Public Administration and a Masters in European Politics and Law.

The Authority is the key body responsible for oversight of all University Affairs. The Governing Authority membership consists of the President of the University, academic representatives, local Councillors and representatives from the local community and business sector.

Sarah Jane, who topped the poll of six candidates stated ‘I’m honoured to have been elected by my fellow graduates to the authority. UL has given me a lot in my life and career and I am glad to be able to give back.”

The University has had well documented issues recently in terms of accounting practices and treatment of whistle-blowers. Sarah Jane has pledged to place reform and accountability at the centre of her tenure.

“Like many others affiliated with the University, I was disappointed to see such unacceptable practices come to light recently. I have extensive experience in governance and reform through my political and professional work, so I intend to bring that to bear during my time on Governing Authority.”

However, with the prospects of an imminent General Election dissipated, Sarah Jane is focusing on the University and its place in Limerick.

“UL plays a crucial role in Limerick, economically and culturally. I’m looking forward to contributing to its future through assisting with the reforms in progress. I’m confident this will ensure staff are confident enough to air concerns and ensure that we have public institutions that operate as they should,” she said.
