Minister rules out Limerick to Shannon railway link

-

THE prospect of a railway link between Shannon Airport and Limerick City has been ruled by Transport Minister Shane Ross who has stated that the project is not a priority.

Limerick City Fine Gael Senator Kieran O’Donnell recently proposed Cratloe and Sixmilebridge as potential sites on the Limerick to Ennis line to link with Shannon Airport.

Sinn Fein Senator Paul Gavan advanced a similar proposal recently, but Minister Ross derailed the idea in reply to a Dáil question last week.

“It was looked at a decade ago and deemed too expensive. It’s not a priority now,” he commented.

A feasibility study by MVA Consultants put a cost of €700 million on constructing the rail link. However, Shannon Rail Partnership claims it would cost €240 million.
