CHIEF executive of Index on Censorship, Jodie Ginsberg will deliver a talk at the Limerick Civic Trust’s Autumn Lecture Series tonight (Thursday September 28) to mark Banned Books Week – a global series of events celebrating the freedom to read.
Ginsberg will speak about how censorship stifles debate and undermines the tenets of free and democratic societies in St Mary’s Cathedral at 8pm. She will comment on press freedom particularly in relation to Trump’s smearing of the media.
Organised in conjunction with UL’s Kemmy Business School and the support of LIT and Limerick Council and media sponsors Irish Examiner, the six-part series of public lectures will examine many topical issues like the impact of Brexit, Trumpism, immigration, integration in multi-cultural societies, censorship and lots more.
Other speakers in the series include; former head of HSBC, Stephen Green, Shaykh Dr Uma Al-Qadri, head Imam of Al-Mustafa Islamic Educational & cultural Centre Ireland, Irish Times columnist Simon Carswell, international architect Ian Ritchie and international property develop Roger Madelin.
The lectures, which run on Thursday evenings, run until October 19 in St Mary’s Cathedral.
Proceeds from the series will be used by the Limerick Civic Trust for the restoration of St Munchin’s Church in the heart of King’s Island.
