LIMERICK Writers’ Centre is hosting a poetry masterclass with the Madrid-based John Liddy on Saturday July 15 from 10am to 4pm.
Under the theme of ‘Repossessing the Poetry of the Dispossessed’, Liddy takes the seminal work ’An Duanaire 1600-1900: Poems of the Dispossessed by Ó Tuama & Kinsella’ (1981) with a view to clarifying those Irish, English and European strands found in some of the poems.
“Links with the poetry we write today will be explored. Participants are expected to bring a draft poem in English or Irish (with translation in English) and time will be spent working on those drafts. Participants will read aloud the finished poem at the end of the day.”
John Liddy is founding editor, along with Jim Burke, of the literary magazine ‘The Stony Thursday Book’. He has published ten collections of poetry in English and three of those with Spanish translations, as well as books for children.
His most recent book of poetry is ‘The Secret Heart of Things’ (Revival Press, 2014). He was Limerick City of Culture Poet in Residence for July 2014 and is co-editor of the recent publication ‘1916-2016: An Anthology of Reactions’.
