Dóchas officially opened their building at 14 Parnell Street Limerick and renamed it the John Ryan Resource Centre for Autism in honour of a past member who had worked tirelessly for the group over the years.

They also unveiled their new sensory room for children and young adults with Autism. The room was funded by the generosity of members, and various groups who fundraise on their behalf.

Sensory ‘breaks’ are hugely beneficial for people with autism, helping them to deal calmly when their environment impinges to the point of overload.

Said Pamela Downes from Dochas Limerick, “the room is a fantastic resource. It’s such a calm place for children and their parents and for young adults who can go in there alone as well”.

The sensory room features tiny houses filled with textures and textiles, an infinity tunnel, a projection screen for films and fish swimming calmly.

Dochas Limerick currently caters for more than 40 families affected by autism and the organisation has ambitious plans, now that it has moved to a new and more suitable premises.

“We’re working on having a gaming room, a dedicated cinema and chill room and a music therapy room, all down the line,” said Pamela.

Dochas’ role is to ensure that the best and most appropriate support, practical help and knowledge is made available to families of all people with Autism. The organisation is responsible for Red Hill School in Patrickswell being set up, and various respites.

Autism is a life-long condition that inhibits social skills and affects the ability to communicate. It is known as a developmental disorder, i.e. it’s not usually obvious at birth but emerges as a child grows and develops.
