The Bishop of Limerick, Brendan Leahy, has visited the Limerick Islamic Cultural Centre to show his solidarity with local Muslims community who are observing a holy month of Ramadan.
Ramadan is observed by Muslims worldwide as a holy month of fasting, introspection and prayers. Fasting is one of the five fundamental principles of Islam. Each day during Ramadan, Muslims do not eat or drink from sunrise to sunset. Muslims break their daily fasts by sharing meals with family and friends, and the end of Ramadan is celebrated with a festival known as Eid al-Fitr.
The Bishop, shared an Iftar (breaking of fast) meal with Muslims present at that occasion at the Centre.
The Bishop and the head of the Limerick Islamic Cultural Centre discussed matters pertaining to mutual interests. Both stressed the importance of interreligious harmony and unity among the intellectuals as well as the common people of the community for a healthy society.
