A VOTE to change the name of The Square in Newcastle West to Con Colbert Square has been defeated.
The ballot box was opened this Wednesday in the Newcastle West District Office of Limerick City and County Council at Áras William Smith O’Brien. With 39 residents and ratepayers eligible to vote, it meant that when 22 votes were required for the plebiscite to be carried
However, from a total poll of 27, with one invalid vote, there were 20 votes against the name change. The result means the name of The Square in Newcastle West will remain as is.
The plebiscite followed on from a request by the Municipal District of Newcastle West and was agreed to by the full meeting of Limerick City and County Council on November 28 last.
