ISN’T it mighty when Limerick stars of the daunting West End circuit are sought for principal parts in a bold production that will premier in Limerick? Jacinta Whyte [Miss Saigon, Blood Brothers, Les Miserables] is confirmed in the central role of Angela McCourt in ‘Angela’s Ashes The Musical’, set to open at Lime Three Theatre on July 6.
And popping out of her skin for landing the role of grandmother, Amanda Minihan, another daughter of Treaty City, will share the stage with an international cast.
Pat Moylan is producer, a woman with an impressive career in fostering hit shows in Dublin’s demanding theatres. For Angela’s Ashes’ greater success, she appointed London based director Thom Sutherland to bring to life the music and script developed by Paul Hurt and Adam Howell from Frank McCourt’s controversial, beautiful book.
Bear in mind that Louise Donlan of Lime Tree Theatre pioneered the early student production first for Limerick back in 2014 when the University of Derby cast drew crowds for City of Culture honours.
On to Frank: “As his parents struggle to provide for him and his brothers in 1940s Ireland, we follow young Frank’s escapades and experiences in a Dickensian landscape peopled by a drunken father, a helpless mother, pompous priests, bullying schoolmasters, money lenders and dance teachers, culminating in his defiant escape to a new life in America.”
A haunting score compounds the emotional impact and humour promised.
“By turns, deeply moving and riotously funny, this new musical promises to be one of the major theatrical events in Ireland in 2017.”
Book ahead on 061-953400 and there will be matinée performances.
