THE shortlist of ten albums for the RTE Choice Music Prize was announced today on 2fm.
Limerick Clare act, Rusangano Family are among the ten acts selected.
Now in its 12th year, the Choice Music Prize celebrates and acknowledge the best in Irish albums released in the previous 12 months.
Limerick and Clare hip hop/world/soul trio Rusangano Family released ‘Let The Dead Bury The Dead’ in April. The album’s main themes are moving forward and identity. The band called the album, “a call to redefine success and failure” and a “reminder of the impact individual lives can have on the collective.” Critics declared the album a game changer for Irish hip hop. The record was named Album of the Year on music blog Nialler9.
This year’s winning act will receive €10,000, a prize fund which has been provided by The Irish Music Rights Organisation (IMRO) and The Irish Recorded Music Association (IRMA). All of the shortlisted acts will receive a specially commissioned award.
Last year’s winner was the debut album from Soak, ‘Before We Forgot How To Dream’ released on Rough Trade. Bitter Pill by Gavin James scooped the Song of the Year prize.
The RTÉ Choice Music Prize live event takes place in Vicar Street, Dublin on Thursday March 9.
