A COUNTY Limerick petrol station was destroyed on Tuesday night after a car crashed through the pumps and shop window.

Three units of Limerick Fire and Rescue Service attended the scene of a road traffic incident at Kilcornan Service Station on Tuesday night after a car crashed into a filling pumps.

Gardai are now investigating the incident where the car, heading towards Limerick, left the N69 road at around 8pm.

Two men, the driver and his passenger, were treated at the scene by Emergency Paramedics before being transferred to University Hospital Limerick.

Crews from the County Limerick fire service based at Foynes and Rathkeale attended the scene and remained for over three hours.

The shop, which has not traded in a sometime, was destroyed when the car crashed through the front window.

Independent local councillor, Emmett O’Brien has renewed his calls for speed limits to be reduced in the area as there is a national school located a short distance from the scene of the accident.

Kilcornan Community Council want traffic route lighting installed in the vicinity of Kilcornan National School and the Ger McDonnell all-weather playing facility and Kilcornan Community Centre as well as enhanced traffic calming and safety measures.

Last month, Cllr O’Brien said that “it is high time that the safety of the children playing around the school and the all-weather facility is recognised. We are being increasingly ignored,” he declared.
